Tap Savy - Cambodia

“I have big dreams, so we never stop. Even if it’s slow, we continue to work forward.” Tap Savy is indeed a passionate teacher. But when she first arrived at her school, in 2008, in the Cambodian town of Poipet, giving class was a real challenge. There were no windows or doors to the classrooms and every time it rained, the classrooms were flooded. The school was just an empty and devastated shell, with just 20 students, and nobody in the local community was engaged with the school.

Nevertheless, Savy knew that she had to do something to turn things around for the children in her community. She persisted in making Samaki Meanchey Primary School a better place and eventually she got promoted as school director, got a training and some funds for her school.

“They said that they never imagined the school could be like this.” Savy dedicated ten years to build a strong relationship with the parents, the teachers and the local community. With the funds, she improved the classrooms and the yard so even with hot temperatures or heavy rains teachers could carry on. In addition, she developed an inspiring school environment. The school now has a library on wheels, a playground made of recycled materials, a biodiversity garden where children produce vegetables or a mobile kitchen. The results are there, thanks to Savy’s work, from pre-school to Grade 6, they are now 450 students educated in her public school. #SheisWe.
